Celebration of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Each year at the main church in Puerto Vallarta (as in all churches named for the Lady of Guadalupe), from December 1 through 12, people from all around make a pilgrimage to the church to honor “Our Lady of Guadalupe”. People come in traditional dress (such as Charros and Mariachis) and many of the children are dressed as the Virgin or as Juan Diego, the poor native person to whom she appeared (click here for more information).
Some streets are closed down in the evenings so the pilgrims can parade without worry, and as each group arrives at the church, day or night, their arrival is heralded by ringing of the church’s bells and sometimes even some fireworks.
On December 12, a composite Mariachi band made up of some of the best players from various bands, plays rousing music inside the church, and in bygone days the Charros used to ride their horses right up the church steps to be blessed.
This is a must see event if you are in PV at this time.
